This hand-painted Deruta Sugar Bowl with lid is designed to be used as a sugar bowl on a tray or table .  It has a lid to keep the contents of the bowl fresh.  This is a lovely piece of genuine Italian table ware.

The 'Ricco Deruta' design dates back to the days of the silk trade in the 13th century and an oriental influence is obvious in this design, which includes a symmetrical, stylized, floral design.  It also features yellow fruit and green foliage.  The inside of the jar is painted in white.  This jar has been hand painted by artists in Deruta in this ancient design.  

On the base of the jar, the artist has hand painted the inscription 'Deruta (the small Umbrian town where this item has been made),  M.O.D. in a diamond which stands for 'Majolica of Deruta', the name of the company that has made the item. Underneath this is 'Dip. a Mano' which means 'Painted by Hand'.

The jar measures 95mm to the very top of the lid and 70mm in external diameter.  This jar could be used of course for storing anything on your bench-top and in itself will add a lovely Italian touch of class to your kitchen.
