This is a gorgeous hand-painted Italian ceramic Biscotti jar with lid. The design is a simple and beautiful design called 'Fondo Rosso' (which translates to 'Red Base') by the manufacturer in Deruta, Umbria. The design features a black and grey pattern set on a red base around the middle of the jar On each side there is a lion's head and in this case the artist has decorated the head with the eyes and eyebrows defined. The lid features a matching design and has a convenient handle on top.
On the base of the jar the artist has inscribed by hand the where the jar has been made and painted. 'MOD' stands for 'Majolica of Deruta' and below it is 'Deruta, Italy' followed by 'Dip. A Mano', which translates from Italian to 'Painted by Hand'.
The jar measures just over 230mm from the base to the top of the handle on the lid and the base is 255mm in diameter 'lion nose to lion nose'. The opening of the jar is 100mm in diameter which is wide enough to retrieve a handful of cookies!
