Here are the top six recommendations of places to eat in Rome:
  1. Pizzeria Remo - A 75 year old pizzeria considered among the best in Rome, frequented by locals (always a very good sign) and every pizza is baked to order on the spot.  The pizza bianca con fiori di zucca is highly recommended.  Serves dinner only; closed Sundays.

    Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatice, 44 Testaccio.  Phone +39 6 574 6270

  2. La Fraschetta del Pesce - A new restaurant specialising in fresh seafood.  The owner's son supplies fresh seafood daily from Anzio.  Lovely dishes from just €13 and up to €40.  Serves both lunch and dinner; closed Mondays

  3. La Tavernaccia da Bruno - the chef in this trattoria is said to frequently be called out from the kitchen by patrons to take compliments on his rigatoni alla carbonara (€9) and trippa alla romana (tripe in a delecate tomato sauce (€12).  Open for both lunch and dinner; closed Wednesdays.

  4. La Nuova Cantinetta - A definitive Roman trattoria nestled between two apartment buildings in the Garbatella quarter of Rome. A frequent haunt of the local taxi drivers (tassiti).  Prices are low with dishes from €6.  Both lunch and dinner are served here; closed Sundays.

  5. Il Tunnel - great seafood dishes here, from as little as €7, but it is the affogato (home made custard ice cream drizzled with espresso (€6) for which this place is renowned.  Serves both lunch and dinner; closed Mondays.

    Via Arezzo, 11, Nomentano. Phone +39 6 4423 6808

  6. Perilli - this restaurant, while a little dearer than the ones above serves great food.  This was once a favourite of Frank Bruni, the New York Times restaurant critic.  Rigatoni alla carbonara is €13.  Perilli serves both lunch and dinner and is closed on Wednesdays.

    Via Marmorata, 39, Testaccio.  Phone +39 6 574 2415.
